This article describes the path that will show the migration from voltage-controlled temperature-compensated crystal-oscillator (VC-TCXO) modules to digitally controlled crystal oscillators (DCXO)-based solutions for global system for mobile communications/General Packet Radio Service. It discusses the importance of discerning the benefits and subtle differences between the use of VC-TCXO modules, VCXO, or DCXO implementations. Each approach can be differentiated by bill of materials, external components, and ease of design and manufacturing. Also, the most competitive handsets will take advantage of newly developed digital automatic frequency control techniques to capture increased flexibility or standby time.
