ABSTRACT
This article reports on the plan of Sky to unveil an interactive TV portal that will give digital satellite viewers access to Web-based business and personal home pages as of June 16, 2005. The yet-to-be-named service will be available without subscription to Sky's 7.7 million existing pay-TV homes, as well as those paying the one-off 150 fee for its Freesat proposition. Sky is keen to point out that its intention is not to offer Web through TV, but to provide access to a range of Internet services that have been adapted for digital satellite audiences. After 18 months of development. the portal will allow viewers to use their TVs to access tailored Web content via conventional URLs, a dedicated listings page or a search engine. Personalization features will enable viewers to save their favorite links and access a history of previously visited services. They will also be able to create an individual profile, allowing them to carry out online transactions more easily. Sky believes the initiative will represent a significant new opportunity for Web site owners interested in delivering their services to a range of devices beyond the PC. Online business operators, not-for-profit organizations and consumers will be able to adapt their services for TV using the WTVML technology that was developed by Sky and made available as a public standard.
