ABSTRACT
The article reports on Doug Roder, vice president of JDS Company, and Chuck Morrison, DISA Systems' Southeast regional sales manager, who discuss the pros and cons of dust collection systems. When installing a dust collection system in the shop, a major consideration is the size and layout of the shop's equipment. A central system designed to handle many pieces of equipment will tend to require a larger dust collection unit. In shops with multiple equipment locations requiring a large number of turns and long runs of piping, a central system may not be the answer. In this situation, portable dust collectors are a good solution. They can be wheeled from place to place, or be permanently attached to several pieces of equipment at a time. It is usually more costly and time-consuming to install a central dust collection system vs. a portable one. If price is a major consideration, one or multiple portable dust collectors can be used in various areas throughout the shop.
