The article reports that Pier 1 Imports Inc. has received a bitter welcome to fiscal 2005, suffering a 12 percent comp-store sales decline during the opening quarter. Marvin Girouard, chairman and CEO of the company said during the company's quarterly conference call that the dip was due to a lapse between marketing campaigns that resulted in slow store traffic. Pier 1 carried out a brand awareness survey from June 11 through 15 to determine the success of its nascent advertising campaign. The survey will be followed by exit interviews and focus-group discussions.
