Forced Cooling Eliminates Distribution Bottleneck

The article reports that by cooling existing duct banks, Seattle City Light Co. has drastically increased the apacity of its underground urban distribution circuits. It is reported that Seattle City Light identified a thermal bottleneck that limited ampacity of 13-kV cables inside duct banks near a major substation supplying downtown Seattle, Washington. Investigations determined that new substation construction was not feasible, nor was it feasible to interrupt customers to perform capacity-improvement work. Finally, a chilled water heat-removal system solved these problems.
