Electrochemical Oxidation of Iodide in the Presence of Benzenesulfinic Acids and Its Application to the Quasi-Catalytic Determination of Benzenesulfinic Acids

ABSTRACT
The mechanism of the electrochemical oxidation of iodide in the presence of 4-toluenesulfinic acid was studied in an aqueous solution using cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry. The results indicate that the anodically generated iodine reacts with 4-toluenesulfinic acid through a quasi-catalytic process. In addition, the results indicate the suitability of iodide as a mediator for the determination of 4-toluene-sulfinic acid in aqueous solutions. The quasi-catalytic peak currents are linearly dependent on the 4-toluene-sulfinic acid concentrations in the range 6.0 �10-3 - 8.0 � 10-6 M.
