ABSTRACT
Kamal Pashazada (873/1468-940/1534) is a distinguished scholar, a thinker and a politician during the heyday of the Ottoman State. He greatly influenced the Ottoman Sultans Yavuz Salim and Kanuni Sulayman. He worked as a teacher in various madrasahs and as a Shaikh al-Islam and a kazaskar. He has nearly two hundred works. In his epistle entitled Fi Haqq Abawayn al-Nabi (Epistle on the Status of the Prophet's Parents), he reviewed the opinions of earlier Islamic scholars about the religious status of the Prophet's parents, and discussed whether the Prophet's parents were unbelievers or not and whether to say that they were unbelievers would be an insult and annoyance to the Prophet. This epistle reflects the mainstream views on these issues since Ibn Kamal hold significant positions as a Shaikh al-Islam and a kazaskar.
