ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the market performance of DSL equipment manufacturers. DSL equipment manufacturers like Alcatel, Huawei and Siemens have experienced tremendous growth in recent years. From 2002 to 2004, the market for DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs) increased 42 percent from $2.4 billion to $3.4 billion. During the same period, the number of ports shipped also skyrocketed, from 24 million to 52 million. Further, DSL is the most widely adopted broadband technology, accounting for almost 70 per cent of the worldwide broadband subscriber base of 145 million users. During the second half of 2004, the total number of worldwide DSL users reached % million, a growth of more than 30 million users over 2003. However, there are many indications that the astounding growth of DSL is slowing, specifically, the growth rates of DSLAM port shipments and new DSL subscribers are both slipping. In 2004, the worldwide annual growth rate of DSL port shipments decreased to 15 percent from 89 percent in 2003 and the growth rate of new subscribers to DSL declined to 27 percent from 53 percent in 2003.
