ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decision of Minneapolis Fire Department in Minnesota to go on the offensive with a geographic information system (GIS) deployment model after a round of layoffs of firefighters and budget cuts in 2002 and 2003 because of a loss of funding from the state legislature. Consulting firm Citygate Associates LLC uses the FireView, a software package that combines geographic mapping with dispatch incident data analysis, to conduct an assessment of risk and deployment coverage for the department. The department knows that having the benchmark standards of effective firefighting requires having a standard of coverage plan backed by GIS analysis.
