ABSTRACT
The divergence of an ion beam in a cylindrical accelerator with a closed Hall current is considered under the assumption that the Hall current does not substantially change the external magnetic field. It is shown that the tangent of the angle of inclination of the ion trajectories to the cylinder axis is on the order of the ratio of the electron gyroradius in terms of the total energy of an electron to the characteristic radius of the acceleration channel. The beam divergence can be prevented by applying an external magnetic field in a direction parallel to the cylinder axis. 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
