ABSTRACT
The article discusses the candidature of Barack Obama for representing Illinois in the U.S. Senate. Obama is honorable, clearly intelligent and very articulate. Combined with a self-described practical streak, he could accomplish much for Illinois and help raise the bar for public service in a state sorely lacking elected role models. His opponent, Republican Alan Keyes, lacks the temperament to represent Illinois in Washington D.C. The bulk of work in the Senate involves balancing competing and deserving interests, not condemning fellow citizens.
