ABSTRACT
This article focuses on how local cultures can be brought to libraries. For school and public librarians who are looking for authentic resources to explore the local culture of Kentucky, there is a rich body of ready-to-use media materials, including books, live performances, audio and video recordings, featuring Kentucky versions of the Jack Tales. This article reviews the origin and oral tradition of the Jack Tales along with tales featuring his female counterpart, Mollie, and suggests resources specific to Jack in Kentucky that can be incorporated into school and library programs featuring local culture. In the U.S., Jack Tales can be distinguished from other tales by commonalities in characters and plot. Jack Tales differ from region to region by a change of setting. A number of Appalachian and Kentucky writers, filmmakers, and theater troupes have taken advantage of the Jack Tales tradition and have brought Jack to life in book, story, song, and film. For a younger audience there are three children's books presenting traditional versions of Jack Tales as they are told in Kentucky.
