ABSTRACT
This article reports that the project for the research and development of the 1500 t/a furan phenol technology, sponsored by Hunan Research Institute of Chemical Industry, has won the second scientific and technological progress prize of the state for 2004. It is reported that the pyrocatechol process is used in the technology to get high-purity furan phenol through etherification, position inversion, ring closing and fractionation. The first process step, that is the preparation of intermediate o-methoxypropyl phenol, won invention patent in China in October 2004. In monoether synthesis the institute has developed a composite solvent composed of solvents with different polarities. The product is used as catalyst to replace amino pyridine and the conversion rate of pyrocatechol and the selectivity of monoether are improved. A 1500 t/a furan phenol unit using the technology was already completed and put on stream in 1999.
