This article focuses on Food Mart in Oakland, California. Two CSNews editors popped inside the store for a cold beverage and were dismayed to find eight cooler-door lights out and a store that reeked of cigarette smoke. On the innovative front, however, the location was selling athletic wear and shoes on the outer perimeter of the parking lot, accompanied by a special display inside the store. At about 10 a.m. on a very cold day, a CSNews editor who couldn't wait to get her hands around a hot cup of coffee stopped in a Quick Chek in Morris Plains, New Jersey. The coffee counter was dirty and unkempt, and most of the pots were empty. She left the store disappointed, with no coffee.
