ABSTRACT
The article presents information on several ships of the U.S. Coast Guard. The 12 ships in the Hamilton class were commissioned in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and several saw extensive combat duty in Vietnam. The class underwent a fleet rehabilitation and modernization from 1985 through 1992, receiving upgrades to radars and other sensors, fire-control systems, weapons and helicopter flight-deck facilities. The article also reports that the Famous-class cutters, which began entering service in 1983, are equipped with a shipboard command-and-control system that permits maximum operational effectiveness with reduced crews.
