ABSTRACT
This article reports on the results of the 2002 National Survey on Financial Stress and Retirement Saving conducted by American Express in the U.S. The study found 61 percent of workers moderately to severely stressed out financially, and 25 percent said their stress had gotten worse in the last 18 to 24 months. The most stress was found among those with moderate or lower incomes. Half of the workers with access to 401(k) plans indicated they want help allocating their plan assets, with a third saying this need has gotten greater as the stock market has gotten worse. Over half also said they were interested in comprehensive financial advice, including managing their stock options, saving for education and consolidating debt.
