ABSTRACT
This article reports on the study conducted by the Financial Research Corp. (FRC) on the five categories of mutual funds, including domestic equities and government bonds, and ten predictors of future performance, including past performance, Morningstar ratings, manager tenure and four measures of volatility and risk. FRC tried to find which predictors would indicate whether a fund would remain in the top half of its peer group. The most reliable predictor was expense ratio, which FRC called exceptional for bond funds and good for stock funds. The study also found past performance an exceptional indicator for bond funds, but of little value for stocks, and it said Morningstar's stars had little predictive value.
