The article focuses on closing of Salinas Public Library system which has three branches. More than 150,000 children and adults will lose access to library materials, computer services, after-school homework help, literacy and cultural programs, and services to the homebound. The children of Salinas, California will be the most profoundly affected by this action. No story times or Harry Potter to captivate the imagination and sharpen the minds of the largely working class populace. The people of Salinas had a choice to pass a tax to save the libraries. Unfortunately, few comprehend the importance of their library until the doors are closed. Public librarians and trustees encounter tough battles in maintaining increasingly antiquated buildings and rising operating expenses. Special librarians face outsourcing to information brokers. As many librarians retire, all types of libraries experience difficulty in filling positions. The tragedy in Salinas is not just a fiscal problem but it is an indication of a decline in the fabric of national heritage of equal access.
