The X-ray tomography of plasmas in large tokamaks made it possible to observe large single-mode magnetic substructures similar to the global structures of the stellarator magnetic configurations. This similarity can serve as the basis for developing a simplified, helically symmetric model that would provide a qualitative description of such substructures and a determination of some thresholds for their possible bifurcation. 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

A phase diagram of the current states of superconducting films is produced on the basis of an experimental study of the resistive transitions induced by the transport current. It is found that a comparatively narrow film of width w<5λ⊥ (λ⊥ is the penetration depth of the magnetic...

A simple analytical expression is presented for hysteretic ac loss Q of a superconducting strip simultaneously exposed to an ac transport current I0 cos ωt and a phase-different ac magnetic field H0 cos(ωt+θ0). On the basis of the critical state model, the authors calculate Q for...

This letter presents a distributed feedback fiber laser that operates in an actively controlled Q-switched regime. The laser is based on a Bragg grating made in an erbium-doped fiber. The grating has a defect induced by a magnetostrictive transducer that configures the distributed feedback laser...

The magnetic field dynamo is a mechanism which occurs in several different environments, such as the interior of stars, accretion disks or the interstellar medium. Because of this diversity, the equations which describe its behavior should incorporate the peculiarities of such different regions....
