ABSTRACT
The article reports on how sponsorships of nonprofit Web sites and other forms of direct-to-consumer (DTC) online advertising are growing exponentially in the late 1990s as prescription drug marketers try to tap health information seekers. Site sponsorships only amounted to about $1 million in 198 about half of all online advertising by pharmaceutical companies. By 2002, it is projected that total health and medical advertising online will top $265 million, with DTC pharmaceutical spending making up half of that. INSET: 11 Web sites support broadcast efforts.
