ABSTRACT
This article reports that individuals eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare benefits will be automatically enrolled in Medicare drug plans in the fall of 2005. Other Medicare beneficiaries will be allowed to start enrolling for drug coverage in November. Coverage for most outpatient prescription drugs and payment for medication therapy management services for select beneficiaries will begin on January 1, 2006. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, prescription drug plans and managed care Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans are obligated by law to educate providers and beneficiaries about the new benefit in general and the available coverage options specifically. As the most accessible and one of the most trusted groups of health care professionals, pharmacists will be looked to by many beneficiaries for assistance with evaluating and selecting a Medicare drug plan.
