The article reports that kitchen chain John Lewis of Hungerford has insisted that it will ride out the current downturn in orders and is not dependant on a recovery in the housing market. It warned last week that orders had been lower than it had anticipated and it would not make a profit in the six months to the February 28, 2005. Richard Worthington, commercial and finance director said the company is still attracting shoppers, but they are taking longer to place an order. The 10-outlet chain has experienced mixed fortunes in the kitchen market in the past 18 months, compounded by showroom upheaval.
