Mortgage Banking;Mar2005, Vol. 65 Issue 6, p20
This article focuses on the market share of the companies Countrywide Financial Corp., Calabasas, California; Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Inc., Des Moines, Iowa; Washington Mutual Inc., Seattle; and Chase Home Finance, Edison, New Jersey. As the mortgage industry matures and consolidates, the Big Four continue to gobble up origination market share. The top four lenders last year controlled 40 percent of the market, up from 25.4 percent in 2000. The Big Four must maintain a presence in all channels, retail, wholesale and correspondent. Because of bank branch expansion, some of them must dedicate disproportionate resources to developing the retail channel, for instance, even though it may not be the most profitable, efficient or productive.
