ABSTRACT
The article comments on a study, which reports that carotid artery stenting is noninferior to endarterectomy in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis and coexisting conditions. 4 small randomized trials suggest that angioplasty, stenting, or both are associated with a slightly higher procedural risk than endarterectomy and a higher rate of restenosis. Improvements in cerebral protection devices promise to reduce the procedural risks.
