ABSTRACT
The article cites a study, which determines if carotid artery stenting with an emboli-protection device is noninferior to carotid endarterectomy in patients with severe carotid artery stenosis (CAS) and coexisting conditions. 334 patients were included in the study. They had unilateral or bilateral atherosclerotic or restenotic lesions in native carotid arteries. In patients with severe carotid artery stenosis and coexisting conditions, carotid artery stenting with an emboli-protection device was noninferior to carotid endarterectomy. The study was published in the 2004 issue of "New England Journal of Medicine."
