ABSTRACT
The article cites a study related to the effectiveness of caspofungin (CF) and liposomal amphotericin B (AB) in preventing or reducing invasive fungal infections (FIs). 1123 patients were included for the study that received chemotherapy for cancer or had hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. Patients were stratified by risk and use of systemic antifungal prophylaxis and allocated to intravenous CF plus placebo or once daily liposomal AB plus placebo. In patients with persistent fever and neutropenia, caspofungin (CF) was equivalent to liposomal amphotericin B (AB) for favorable overall response. The study was published in the 2004 issue of "New England Journal of Medicine."
