ABSTRACT
The article cites a study on the utility of atorvastatin in reducing major cardiovascular disease events in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study was published in the 2004 issue of the journal "Lancet." For the study, 2838 patients of 40 to 75 years of age with type 2 diabetes mellitus were included. 10 mg Atorvastatin was administered daily. The rates for the composite endpoint were lower in the atorvastatin group than in the placebo group. When individual components of the composite endpoint were evaluated, the atorvastatin group had lower rates for acute coronary events and stroke, but not for coronary revascularization.
