Controlled-release disopyramide offers many potential advantages over the standard formulation for improved patient compliance, possible reduction of concentration-related adverse effects, and predictability of pharmacologic effect. The pharmacology of disopyramide, potential advantages and disadvantages of the use of sustained- (or controlled-)release formulations of drugs, and the preliminary finding of our use of controlled-release disopyramide are described. Controlled-release disopyramide is a promising addition to the antiar- rhythmic formulary that may increase the clinical utility of disopyramide.
