ABSTRACT
The article informs that the U.S. economy is so large and powerful that companies, government agencies and even individuals can sometimes take actions that fly in the face of logic. So it is with state departments of transportation that are throwing in the towel on efforts to convert from the U.S. Customary System of weights and measures to the International System of Units. California and the majority of states that are switching back to the "English" system claim the metric conversion was too hard, expensive and time consuming. The U.S. inherited the English system as a former colony. But even the Customary System used today differs from the British Imperial System of weights and measures. The metric system in the U.S. is in solidly with the U.S. scientific and manufacturing crowd because that's the way the rest of the world measures.
