ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the impact of plumbing on column performance. The article author views that when real samples are analyzed on typical liquid chromatographic systems, rarely do we observe plate numbers anywhere near the manufacturer's claim. Some of this performance degradation is a result of extracolumn effects. The examination of the influence of connecting tubing on column performance was conducted with the implication that tubing was a very important factor. However, the data show that for 2,1 mm i,d, or larger columns, the influence of connecting tubing is of little importance if user is conservative about the length and diameter of connecting tubing used.
