ABSTRACT
1. Many observations in acute myocardial infarction are difficult to explain and are similar to those made in experimental intravascular sludging. 2. Intravascular sludging is a consistent observation in acute myocardial infarction. 3. This sludging was treated in a well-established manner with low molecular dextran in an effort to determine if the sludging was a significant factor in the pattern of infarction and whether its control would be beneficial to the patient. 4. The results indicate that the sludging is undoubtedly a factor in the pattern of myocardial infarction. 5. Clinical observations and mortality figures are encouraging and do not contraindicate further study in this problem. Any further conclusions regarding benefits to the patients are unjustified in this preliminary stage.
