Twenty-five patients with various cardiac arrhythmias were treated with a new quinidine salt, quinidine polygalacturonate. The usual daily dosage was one 275-mg tablet. Duration of therapy averaged 133 days In 50 per cent of the patients, quinidine polygalacturonate provided more satisfactory control than previous quinidine sulfate therapy, and in 42 per cent of the patients the new agent was equally as effective In 2 patients, transient side effects made it necessary to discontinue therapy. It was striking that single-tablet dosages (275 trig) of quinidine polygalacturonate were sufficient to provide maintenance control of the arrhythmia or to reduce the ventricular rate in patients who previously had required 400 to 2400 mg of quinidine sulfate each day. This study showed quinidine polygalacturonate to be effective and convenient for the control of a variety of cardiac arrhythmias. Its use in relatively small dosages provided therapeutic efficacy comparable to that obtained with quinidine sulfate with less risk of the aide effects attending the use of conventional quinidine preparations.
