ABSTRACT
Below normal protamine titration results were observed in the blood of 73 per cent of 96 normotensive nonarteriosclerotic, nondiabetic atherosclerotic patients. The remaining 27 per cent gave results within the normal range. Of 44 patients with hypertension, arteriosclerosis and impending or actual congestive failure resulting from these conditions, the incidence of below normal protamine titration was below 20 per cent. The relationship of these findings to possible variations in the levels of heparin and/or related substances has been discussed with reference to (1) the lipoprotein lipase activating properties of these substances and (2) the possible influence of this relationship on the development of atherosclerosis.
