There were 28 dogs which received abdominal aortic homografts that had been taken from dogs embalmed 24 hours previously. Of these grafts, 26 were preserved by the freeze-drying process. Of the animals, 12 had an unembalmed homograft from the same donor, placed in line with the embalmed homografts. This allowed excellent comparison of results. Embalmed homografts were as satisfactory as the unembalmed homografts, and in many cases were more satisfactory. There should be no delay between death and embalming. Careful selection and preparation of the homograft is largely responsible for its ultimate fate. Embalmed freeze-dried aortic homografts have been used for replacement of the additional aorta in 2 patients. Both grafts are functioning well at the end of 43 and 45 months, respectively.
