ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the adventure travel magazines to be released in April 1999. The National Geographic Society will introduce the magazine National Geographic Adventure while Times Mirror Magazine will unveil Outdoor Explorer, with three issues planned for the first year. The magazines will join a category long dominated by Maria Media's Outside. National Geographic Adventure will present aspirational as well as accessible trips, all backed with lots of service information. The spinoff will include articles on remote destinations such as Tibet and profiles on explorers. Advertisers are enthusiastic about the category. The first issue of National Geographic Adventure includes 70 advertising pages. Category leader Outside has a rate base of 525,000, and carried 1,276.2 advertising pages in 1998.
