ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the design and construction of the new history museum at Yad Vashem, Israel. The design by architect Moshic Safdie brings 5,611 square meters of new space for exhibits, research, education and remembrance to the serene site with a light touch. Yad Vashem, which means "memorial for the names" in Hebrew, is dedicated to remembering the names of the 6 million Jews killed by the Nazis. The 500-ft-long central spine of the new history museum, a 60-ft-tall trapezoid in cross section, carries visitors down at a 5° incline and then back up "to light-to life." The cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structure was designed by structural engineers S. Ben Abraham Engineers Ltd. and Y. Gordon Engineers Ltd. of Jerusalem.
