ABSTRACT
The fibrinolytic activity was studied in fiftyone normal individuals and patients with atheroselerotic vascular disease after physical exertion or injections of nicotinic acid. All groups showed equal reactivity to the stimuli given, judged by acceleration of euglobnlin clot lysis, but in none of the patients tested could fibrinogeno/fibrinolytic breakdown products be demonstrated. Control experiments were made, testing blood samples with and without the addition of epsilon amino-caproic acid, and after the injection of nicotinic acid breakdown products were found in samples not containing inhibitor. An explanation of these findings is suggested. It is concluded that physical activity and nicotinic acid both are potent liberators of plasminogen activator, but that it is possible to have a significantly accelerated euglobulin clot lysis without simultaneous, manifest intravascular fibrinogeno/fibrinolysis.
