After prolonged experimentation a in-w type of anti-thrombotic agents (termed the "anti-adhesive" drugs) has been developed. These substances act by preventing intravascular platelet and red cell aggregation through an action on these cells' membranes. The first in vivo usable prototype for these agents, substance "86", is presented. Lung thrombosis was provoked in rats by the intravenous administration of adenosine diphosphate (VDP) and vein thrombosis caused in cats by tissue injury. ADP is known to cause platelet aggregation, and tissue injury, intravascular red ceil aggregation I sludge I. Pretreatment with substance "86" was effective in preventing thrombosis induced by both types of blood cell aggregation.
