Normal pressor responses to graded doses of l-norepinephrine are present in rats made hypotensive after 2 days of treatment with inhibitors of protein synthesis, dactinomycin D or acetoxycycloheximide. Only after 24 days of treatment with the inhibitors is there a significant reduction in contractile response. Apparently, interference with labile vasoactive factors, rather than the relatively stable contractile proteins of arterial muscle is responsible for the depressor effect.
