ABSTRACT
1. Analytic methods for determining the presence of blood nitrites, nitrates and nitrate esters are discussed. 2. Representative blood nitrite levels after oral administration of varying doses of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (Peritrate) are given. 3. Findings indicate that peak blood nitrite levels do not coincide with peak levels of physiologic activity. It is concluded that further work is warranted to determine the presence of other metabolites of orally administered organic nitrates in the blood, and to correlate their presence with physiologic activity.
