ABSTRACT
1. -Phenylethylhydrazine (phenelzine, Nardil) exhibits positive inotropic and chronotropic activities when tested on the papillary muscle or auricles of the cat or the noninnervated chick heart. 2. The cardiostimulant activity of phenelzine can be blocked by dichloroisoproterenol as well as by trimethyl[2-(2,6-xylyloxy)propyl]ammonium chloride. 3. On the basis of the facts presented it appears that the cardiostimulant effects of phenelzine are mediated via a eatecholamine release mechanism independent of an extrinsic adrenergic nerve supply to the myocardium.
