A vaso-active factor in aqueous extract of arterial tissue, not identified with known pressor substances, induces increase in tension of helically-cut aorta strips in vitro. The tension response is markedly depressed by reducing the oxygen content of muscle bath but is restored promptly by adding oxygen. The potency of this factor is more dependent on oxygen than is catecholamine. It is suggested that this factor, through influencing myogenic tone, may be responsible, at least partially, for autoregulatory control of blood flow by oxygen.
