ABSTRACT
An electrical method of consistently inducing platelet thrombi in the coronary arteries of the pig is described. Its particular advantages over previously reported techniques lie in the avoidance of intimal injury and disturbance in haemostatic mechanism. This makes it especially suitable for the observation of coronary artery thrombi, their effects on cardiac muscle function and their alteration by physiologically and pharmacologically induced changes. The applications of this model to the study of coronary artery disease is discussed.
