This article analyses the rapidly evolving rating system for sustainable buildings. Energy and Environmental Design has become widely accepted as the standard of "greenness" for buildings. The owner completes a checklist that outlines goals in six categories as sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality and innovation and design. The health care application guide, for example, will likely include credits to address the importance of process water in addition to potable water, energy efficiency of medical equipment and issues that impact health of occupants.
