ABSTRACT
Focuses on a study that examined the use of an intraaortic balloon pump by St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital-Texas Heart Institute in 1975 in post-cardiotomy patients who, because of a low output state, cannot be weaned from cardiopulmonary bypass despite pharmacologic intervention. Major components of the circulatory support service, an on-line hemodynamic monitoring of critically ill patients during IABP support; Description of the catheter inserted through the veins after IABP insertion; Percentage of patients discharged from the hospital who have shown a marked improvement from 1975 to 1977.
