This article reports that Softier Inc., provider of software-based Internet Protocol (IP) Set-top boxes, and On2 Technologies Inc., the Duck Corporation, are porting the VP6.2 video compression technology to Softier's MediaLinux OS for IP-Television. This IP Television and IP Set-top box operating system runs natively on the Texas Instruments DM64x family of Media DSP. MediaLinux enables, on a single DSP, a layered operating environment where digital signal processing executes together with Linux services and applications. The Softier IP Set-top platform is designed to distribute content in homes, hotels, airplanes, cars and other environments where video can be viewed. The system communicates with media servers on the Internet via built-in Ethernet. It also supports Wireless-Fidelity connections to home networking and Universal Serial Bus connection to removable storage devices. On2's VP6.2 codec is used in set-top, personal computer, satellite system, video conferencing, video surveillance and other applications. On2 Technologies is a technology firm at the forefront of video compression. The company revolutionized digital media delivery with the creation of its advanced full-motion, full-screen, TrueMotion VP4/VP5/VP6 compression and streaming technologies.
