ABSTRACT
This article focuses on tropical rain forests. Ask most people to describe a jungle and they'll probably mention poisonous snakes, thick undergrowth, and cannibals. Although there is often some truth to jungle stereotypes such as these, many are myths or misconceptions that have been reinforced by popular films and books. In most areas, the rain forest floor is relatively clear. Since very little sunlight reaches the forest floor, few plants grow there. The thick, impassable growth shown in many movies occurs only in open areas with lots of sunlight, such as along riverbanks and in clearings. INSET: THE TRUTH TROPICAL RAIN FORESTS..
