This article reports that Merchant Retail gained 21 points, with strong seasonal figures driving the shares to the top of the six month trading range. Although the bulk of sales and profits are attributed to the Perfume Shop chain, the de Gruchy department store in Jersey resisted the sector trend and increased like-for-like sales by 2 percent. Among the troubled department stores, Beales lost 5 points, falling to a new low on figures showing full-year sales to 30 October 2004, down by 5.5 percent, and pre-tax profit down by more than 75 percent to £ 260,000.
