ABSTRACT
The article focuses on Amazon.com Inc. that increased the discount on books priced over $15 from 30% to 32%, and increased the discount on titles over $25 from 32% to 34% to keep prices competitive. Though the company doesn't break out book sales from its media, electronics and other businesses, Amazon's North America media sales grew 18% in 2004, due to the larger discounting of books. The company's third-party sales, which include used books, DVDs and other items, make up about 26% of its total revenues, but the number of used books sold through Amazon's site is unknown.
