ABSTRACT
The Daughters of Bilitis, a social club for lesbians started in San Francisco in 1955, became the first national lesbian organization in the United States. Through its political activism and its publication, The Ladder, it explicitly challenged society's sexism, heterosexism, and homophobia and created a space for lesbians to come together for political, social, and personal empowerment.
